Shinvall

Sometime before the 1901 census the Burnett family moved again. This time to Shinvall which is not far from Rangag where Jessie’s sister Betsy had lived with her husband William Williamson.

In 1900 William died at Shinvall of heart disease. He was 70 years old.

The 1901 census shows Jessie and some of her children still living at Shinvall (aka Shinval). With her are son Andrew aged 22 as an Ag Lab, daughter Christina aged 35, daughter Johan age 29 also an Ag lab, Nearby at Acharaskill is daughter Jessie Burnett aged 18 as a domestic servant. They are all single.

Next door also at Shinvall is daughter Mary who married James Falconer in 1888. She has a 6 year old son (can’t read name) and a 3 year old son named William. John Robertson who was shown in the 1891 census as Jessie’s grandson is living with the Falconers and is working as an Ag Lab.

Thurso

In the 1911 census Jessie Burnett has moved into Thurso. She is living at 32 Barrock Street, Thurso. She is 73 years old. Her daughter Esther is living with her. Esther is aged 33 and single. Two lodgers are living with Jessie and Esther. They are John Ramsey and William Robertson.

Jessie got acute bronchitis and died on 10 March 1917. She was 79 years old. Esther was with her and signed her mother’s death certificate (with what looks like quite a shaky hand).

Picture of 32 Barrock Street, Thurso. Jessie Burnett died in this house. It is not known if she was the owner or a tenant. It looks like the house has been altered with the addition of the top rooms. It probably looked more like the next door houses in 1917.

There is a substantial Burnett gravestone at the New Reay Cemetery. The Inscription reads as follows:
